Medical devices are ubiquitous, but remain very expensive. Emerging economies face a range of healthcare issues that may not cause problems in developed countries, including malaria, tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS and non-communicable diseases such as malnutrition. Medical devices have the potential to transform the way these major issues are addressed - the GeneXpert system for TB diagnostics is one example. What other major healthcare challenges are present in developing countries, and what future medical devices have the potential to eradicate these problems?
