The 2023 heat dome destroyed most of the chayote (mirliton) plants in the state of Louisiana, in the U.S.A.. We now advise small-scale growers to use shade cloths and mulches. Are there any irrigation methods that utilize evaporative cooling to reduce heat stress on leaves and roots? What are gardeners and farmers doing elsewhere to manage the new intense heat events with other crops?
