I have used femtosecond lasers to fabricate waveguides in ZnSe but would like to learn more about the mechanism of how the waveguide forms.

Hi Kenneth,

ZnSe is particularly tricky. We model dielectrics which have large gap energy compared to photon energy so the initial absorption mechanism is MPA followed by electronic avalanche. We have a few papers on this, all of them are on my google scholar page, have a look. Our modelling is limited to electromagnetics including plasma resulting in a steady electron cloud which eventually recombine to produce an instant (compared to heat transfer times) excess of material temperature. We don't do further modelling of material modification.
