I want to test an engine to determine its characteristics using different octane ratings of gasoline: 88 - 90 - 92 - 95 - 98
But first I must choose the method used to determine octane number of gasoline: research octane number or motor octane number
RON (Research Octane Number) is normally higher than MON (Motor Octane Number). MON is time consuming and needed standard test engines. MON would be suit your purpose - to determine effect of different ON (engine knocking characteristic) rating. However, the ON ranges are too narrow. Old engines (more deposits in combustion chamber) are typically required +3-5 ON from the design ON. Because of high production cost - blending high ON components as well as storage tanks, commercial ON gasoline are available, probably 2 grades i.e. 91 and 95. And high ON gasoline is needed for high compression ratio engine with obviously more fuel consumption.
If you are doing lab research than you have to follow RON and If you are doing test on vehicle, or can say real world engines at wide open throttle than follow RdON.
MON required specific and standard test so in my opinion start with RON and also study the RdON.
(RON+MON)/2 is also a good option.

Ron is used in normal conditions and low speeds around 600 rpm while Mon is uesd in severe conditions and high speeds around 900 rpm and thus Ron is always higher than Mon and the favourable choice depends on Ron .the difference between RON and Mon is sensibility . In addition, Posted Octane number is another type of octane rating which calculated according to (RON+MON)/2

OI=RON-K.S; where S is the sensitivity
Yes Mr. Abdellatief; Actually I want to test the engine under many operating conditions (low and high), so I have to use the mentioned relation because it combines the two octane rating: RON and MON.
