What kind of human/environmental/accidental reasons do you think are the main reasons for the destruction & deterioration of Textile-based artifacts in a museum? I work in the area of preventive conservation that deals with pests, so all of my experiences are with damage caused by insects (i.e. silverfish, moths, dermestids). The damage that I have encountered varies from small holes in artifacts through to extensive loss.
I have attached two images. The first (pic16) shows the damage caused to textiles by silverfish 'grazing' on the surface, and the second (pic100) shows dermestid damage to a ceremonial cloak (the items had been stored in museum stores).
