As compared to the "traditional" intracoastal chest tube that are inserted at the bed side for ICU patients to drain pneumothorax / pleural effusion. In the last years some ICUs have been using the newer "Seldenger" over the guide wire technique.
Which style do you prefer? Why?
Is your setup Adult / Pedia or Neonatal ICU?
In our PICU setting , the Seldenger technique is usually preferred : faster and somewhat "less invasive"
However, the team needs to keep their "traditional" technique handy , as on one instance the PICU supply was out, so going back to the original style was literally "life-saving"!
We’ve gone over almost exclusively to the Seldinger type drains in our adult ICU.
Ease of insertion and lower risk levels are what moved us away from traditional chest drains although those wider bore drains still have a place where the narrow bore drains clog in some situations.

Our main initial concern in the pediatric practice was the worry that the Seldenger style could injure the lung if the introducing needle was inserted too far, however, we didn't face any such issues during almost ten years of this practice.
The ease of use and rapid insertion surely outweighs the other potential risks.
