What methods do you prefer or think work best for trying to collaborate with other scientists?
How do you navigate the risks involved in trying to collaborate, and what do you normally do to try and entice participation from another researcher?
I am interested in advancing my research and grow my admittedly small professional network simultaneously.

While collaboration is a desirable goal and has many positive aspects it may not always be the best approach to achieving desired outcomes. The collaboration process frequently results in growth in knowledge, respect, and understanding between the parties involved. Sometimes the synergy from shared investment creates outcomes that are better than either party would have achieved via other methods of conflict resolution. When there is mutual satisfaction with both the process and the outcome the likelihood of productive implementation of decisions and plans is greatly increased. However keep in mind that collaboration is not the best approach to solving all types of problems.
Hi Devin, on RG, I interact with many persons on QA. We can also go through their profiles and see if they will be good collaborators; see what their collaborators say of them. In short, it has to be worth their while. I'm not talking about monetary gain, or at least, not usually, and not necessarily. One way or another, you have to find someone who can help you, while at the same time, they also gain.
The other important variable will be how much time and effort you'll be requiring. The more the co-author stands to gain, the more the main author can request of him or her. If the co-author sees risks in participating, he may simply decline.
I would think that outside your organization, good places to look would be RG, for one, and professional institutions such as the IEEE, where you can meet people with similar interests at symposiums or scheduled meetings. What they call "networking."
