I watched the movie The Paper Chase, which was released in 1973. In the movie, Professor Kingsfield at Harvard Law School chooses a student's name in the student roster and asks the student a question. Professor Kingsfield calls it the Socratic method. However, some students feel embarrassed because they cannot answer correctly.
I use the Socratic method in my class but seek volunteers to answer my questions. Sometimes, no students answered my questions, and I considered using Professor Kingsfield's method. It seems too aggressive, and I am unsure about our university policy. Thus, I do not use such a method.
What do you think about Professor Kingsfield's method of picking up a specific student for questioning?
