Material and Design (Elsevier) has been converted into a mandatory open access journal with an article process fee of USD2000 applicable to all submissions from 1st Nov 2018 on wards. It shocked me a lot to read the notification mail yesterday. The academic research publication is a trillion-dollar business. No journal pays authors to obtain their copy rights before entering into subscription business. Elsevier and other leading publishers started a campaign of making an article open access optionally in all established journals back 2010 onwards by paying open access fee and promoted open access journals. In spite of constantly hiking subscription fees annually, it seems they are not satisfied with the billion-dollar turnover. They started several open access journals recently including Heliyon, Results in Physics etc. Perhaps, they are bit afraid of pirate websites such as Sci-Hub and recent legal fight with Academia.edu and ResearchGate to pull down full text articles. It appears that they have hatched a new plot to convert established journals into mandatory open access journals to secure their income. Many authors from developed countries with surplus funds may afford the mandatory open access fee and like to retain publication in reputed journals. This may not be possible for authors (including myself) from developing and under developed countries. What if they convert all established journals one by one including Materials Characterization, Materials Science and Engineering A, Journal of Alloys and Compounds etc. as open access journals?
