In my opinion, peace building can be taught in an educational setting but it is ultimately learned as a youth through one's parents/caregivers and the rest of the world in general. While education has a large impact on learners, it does not compare to the role models in one's life when young. If we are to foster a greater wave of peace in children we certainly must educate, but we must also change the mindset of those in power, media and popular culture.
The problem with peace building isn't so much education the next generation as education those currently in power and the general populace who are more interested in self preservation than seeking peaceful solutions. Formal education on reaching a small percentage of the population.
What does concern me is how readily educational institutions are prepared to sign up to support the production of violent weaponry and seem to think this is OK. Educational change has to start with the educators and researchers.
As pointed out by Errol it is a sad story that seemingly peaceful countries spend so much on making weapons that eventually destroy (kill) humans. Then we get disappointed with learning about killings everywhere on a daily basis.
Education should be advancing and stressing the peace element in our society and exposing the military built-ups & military solutions that are commonplace today.
Sending children to school, supporting them to exceed their academic year, we get these children to become people with an open mind. An open minded person will have more empathy with other people, they will see the world different. They will have other values, they will not be limited to following consumerism. And more knowing the effects it produces. Those children (future people with open minds), will be those who fight for equality and freedom. They will fight to more people have the opportunities that they had. Those children who study and receive support will be the ones who will change the world.
I think that peace education is crucial, but not sufficient to create a world with lesser violence. With peace education we need to learn of how to resolve conflicts without resorting to violence. However the challenge is that people have this knowledge and still violence happen, so it is equally important to assure that people want to solve their conflicts and conflicts between states in a way that direct and structural violence can be averted.

In my opinion, Education helps people understand the reason that lead to the diversity of cultures, which is governed by living conditions. Thus, we will respect different cultures, thereby respecting the independence and freedom of different nationalities.
Peace and education are inseparable aspects of civilization. No civilization is truly progressive without education, and no education system is truly civilizing without peace (Education for Peace).
