I think that 'engineering' means addressing a societal need through new technology. I therefore tend to assume that 'engineering research' means creating a technology (device, process etc) that no-one has been able to create in a practical/operational way before. But researchers who are more scientifically oriented (ie seeking to understand *phenomena* that are not yet understood) would dismiss this as 'not research'.

So, how can we clarify exactly what 'engineering research' is? How is it different from science? How is it different from just 'normal engineering' work that any engineer would do? What are the grey areas?
