I worked on timber line vegetation of Kumaun Himalaya in early 1980s , you can find many simple to very complex suggestions to define timber line vegetation . A simple explanation for timber line - As altitude increases you will find tree and shrub vegetation to certain point at a higher altitude in temperate zone , but suddenly on mountains , one finds a location where all tree and shrub vegetation has just disappeared , only grasses and other herbacious species are remaining . Such grass+herbacious vegetation is often referred as alpine grasslands in temperate zone .In fact , alpine grasslands are covered with snow to the location where last strip of tree /shrub species occurs for relatively longer period in winter +spring .This last woody vegetation strip in temperate mountains are generally known as timberline or snowline.
