Shahnaz, I'm not sure that I get the weight of your question, particularly as you have asked from "better clarity". What is the connection between your two questions? If I may paraphrase your first question, are you asking, "What is the value or purpose of knowledge (or learning) if we do not also learn fundamentally how to live, gain self-knowledge etc?"
It is important for those who are educated to take care of human life seriously. If one goes through Mahatma Gandhi's seven dangers to human virtue, one of them is knowledge without character. Some scholars add eighth danger to human virtue, which is education without heart or soul. Therefore, education which does not care about human life becomes useless. Education should be able to transform society.
Beside knowledge education should teach us how to conduct ourselves in all sort of situations. it should teach us to be effective manager of our performance and relations .

I think education is itself a value and there is no education that is without values. But nowadays the declining character of teachers and students is a matter of concern, and the answer is ' Education becomes a Business' and is not a 'Service' now.Decades back it was considered as a sacred service where the teachers and students were engaged in becoming good human beings but now it is a profitable business where we are producing trained workers.....
Education can be valuable if it touches on the tree aspects of learning; Cognitive, Affective and Psycho-motor. The affective domain include the values and beliefs of an individual. therefore an education devoid of values is not acceptable to the society because you can only apply your technical skills if only the society subscribe to your believe system. A Skillful person can causes mayhem in society if he does not value live of others however a person of integrity will use the skills to improve human live.
Almost a year ago to the day, 2/11/15, Frank Bruni wrote an essay in the New York Times about the transformative power of educational experiences. His view may be worth considering.
The patient's consent is a process to inform the patient about the risks as well as the benefits of the procedure, and allowing them to choose as per wish. It is also an ethical concept, that patients should understand and agree to the potential consequences of their care.
