Whether the Medical Associations should focus on the welfare of the people

Actually each Medical Association r Society has its own goals. may be if the goal is related to CME or community awareness seminars and workshop will be good activities (methodology) . other societies might involved in researches or community projects. some for coalition the activities of the same interest or specialties.
In Egypt for example I know some societies which involved in research (ex.public health and medical anthropology) and other do community development project .

Medical Association and Societies may have a very relevant role for both scientific and lay society, depending upon the geographical and political environments they are active in. For example several surgical societies are involved in establishing guidelines or standards of good practice, and these efforts can be used by physicians to guide the choices for their patient care, but also by local or national governments to guide their policies. Also they can work with governments on specific issues on public health or healthcare organization (reimbursements, funding, health related legislation)
Medical Associations in the Philippines has its vision as: to have a fellowship of physicians united in the common goal of acquiring the highest levels of medical knowledge and skills through continuing education and research, and to promote the healing ministrations of the physician in the delivery of health care of patients.
Their objectives and missions are:
To bring together and unite the entire medical profession of the Philippines.
To extend medical knowledge and advance medical science.
To elevate the standards of medical education and practice.
To ensure the enactment of just medical laws.
To promote fraternal relations among physicians and between physicians and allied professionals.
To protect the legitimate rights and prerogatives of the physician.
To serve as an authoritative source of information regarding health, disease and medical practice; and
To promote the practice of medicine in the context of Philippine life and culture.
These associations are to help people band together not just for learning, but to safeguard the profession by notifying members of legal concerns to address as a group. The vote of the informed group is more powerful. The group may also write a flood of letters and emails to congress to push for laws to their benefit.
