I would like to know the suitable volume fraction of glass epoxy composites in aerospace composites? What are the different volume fractions in different aerospace applications?
It depends on what products you want to make and what processing method and type of reinforcing fiber you wish to use. Typically, a high performance aerospace composite start with approximately 60 vol% of the reinforcement. But, if you want to have even higher fiber content, you need to pay attention to the hype of reinforcement. If you use woven glass cloth, there is a packing limitation due to the woven points that is lower than the unidirectionally reinforced composite. Thus, the glass cloth reinforced epoxy that is manufactured by compression molding would have lower fiber content than unidirectionally reinforced composite using either pultrusion or filament winding.
