The plants extracts are mainly used as reducing agents for the synthesis of metal NPs, such as Ag, Au, Cu NPs an etc.. These extracts are not strong reducing agents therefore small NPs are obtained. Some of them are first coordinated to the metal cations to form metal comlex and then reduction of the metal takes place.
That's why no surfactant is needed in these types of syntheses and the methods are considered as green ones.
The diversity of secondary metabolites (tannin, flavonoids, saponin, steriodsetc) obtained from fresh aqueous extract made it the plant of choice for the reduction of metal ions.
Dear Muhammad, compared to the common rducing agents, such as sodiumborohidride and hydrazine, most of the plant extracts can be considered as weak reducing agents.
