Several scholars have attempted to place the figure of the Animal Master or Mistress within the context of the cosmology of indigenous people. There appears to be growing evidence of a worldwide expression is this figure in religious traditions throughout the globe.
Do you have any data to support such a position?
Are there figures in the cosmological trope from your research areas to support the identification of an Animal Master/Mistress supramundane figure?
What is the evidence, how is he/she depicted, what is his/her role, what kinds of religious ceremonies, rituals or artistic devises are employed to represent, illustrate and venerate such a deity?
There's also the Minoan Potnia Theron. On a methodological note, I think it's important to look at differences as well as well similarities. Outward similarities may not indicate common meanings across cultures. So speaking of an Animal Master/Mistress is problematic, because it implies it's the same figure worldwide and can be interpreted the same way.... I'm certainly not against the idea of cross-cultural similarity, phenomenological or otherwise, but I'm also very cautious about it.
I'm also skeptical about claims of the great prehistoric antiquity of shamanism (often based on dubious equations between indigenous cultures and what we imagine early humans to have been like), and about the interpretation of rock art as necessarily shamanistic. On these points see Alice Kehoe's Shamans and Religion, and H. Sidky's article "On the antiquity of shamanism and its role in human religiosity," in Method & Theory in the Study of Religion 22.

Sorry, I'm familar with animism and animatism, but not an Animal Master/Mistress.
Some time ago I did a research of animal style as a code system in Scythian toreutics (and some related phenomena). And the figure that can be identified as the Mistress of Animals plays her role there, and not an obscure one. It seems that she marks crossing-points at borders between different culturally marked territories and behaviour models endemic of these territories. Alas, it's in Russian. At least, you can see the pictures - it's roughly the first third of the book.

Dear Allan, this Master of the Animals can be found in some Bestiaries, especially in Louis Charbonneau-Lassay's Bestiary of Christ. It seems to come from ancient traditions related to kings and other leaders.It also seems to be connected to divine figures like Orpheus, whose singing could tame animals. It is also the motive of the famous Pied Piper of Hamelin, who could take the rats out of the town and save the people. In bestiaries, animals represent the good and bad powers of nature, an in order to establish a civilization, these animals must be put to doing a good service, and that is the role of the Master of the Animals. I will look for more information later in the day. I am just brewing my first coffee of the day.

Zu den manakönö gehört der Waldgott Itutari, der zusammen mit seiner Frau auch bei den Maskenauftritten zu erleben ist. Der Name dieser Figur enthält die Karihona-Worte itu und ari bzw. arü, d.h. ‚Wald‘ und ‚Blatt‘, besagt somit in etwa ‚Waldlaub‘. Über mystische Figuren mit ähnlichem Charakter wie den Itutari berichten andere indianische Völker Amazoniens, so z.B. den Corupira oder den Yurupari, die nicht-indianischen Bewohner des Rio Vaupés sprechen vom ‚madremonte‘, was wörtlich übersetzt ‚Wald-Mutter‘ bedeutet. Forscher früherer Dekaden bevorzugten für solche numinose Wesen Ausdrücke wie ‚Wild- und Buschgeister‘, ‚Waldteufel‘ ‚Walddämon‘ etc. (s. z.B. Zerries 1954; Kapfhammer 1992: 57-58)
Von Gestalt ist der Itutari kleiner als ein Mensch, sein ganzer Körper ist stark behaart, er hat einen dicken Bauch und große Testikeln, mit großen Ohren, trägt er lang herab fallendes Haar, das bis zu den Füßen reichen kann, (peludo, cabello largo, ihotiči; barrigón, iwakuči; orejón, ihahanači), hieß es in Puerto Nare (z.B. Felix, Ismael 20.2.74.:3) In Puerto Manacaro betonte man, er verstehe sich zu verwandeln und deshalb den Menschen in vielerlei Gestalt entgegen zu treten, als Knabe, als Frau und sogar in Gestalt eines Bekannten (Horacio P., Joaquin C. 14.7.74.).
Der Itutari wohnt gemäß einer Aussage in einer Erdhöhle am Oberlauf eines Baches, Marco T. zufolge in der Höhle eines riesigen Baumes, die durch Moder oder Blitzschlag entstanden sein mag. Bartolo (m2; 27r) sprach von einer Höhle in der ‚loma alta‘, hübü, im Quellgebiet, womit die Tafelberge im früheren Siedlungsraum der Karihona gemeint sein mögen. Es handelt sich um scheinbar normale Höhlen, an denen man vorbeigehen kann, ohne gewahr zu werden, dass dies eine Behausung des Itutarü ist.
Vom Itutari berichten mehrere Mythen der Karihona (Schindler 1973; 1977). In diesem Zusammenhang habe ich das Wesen und Wirken dieser Gestalt nach Auskunft meiner Gesprächspartner charakterisiert, diesem Text folge ich hier weitgehend. In diesen Erzählungen tritt der Itutari als gefährlicher Gegner auf, den die Karihona dank ihrer Intelligenz besiegen, genauer gesagt mittels einer List. Demnach erschlugen Karihona vorzeiten den Itutari, woraufhin aus seinem zerschmetterten Körper zahlreiche Nutzpflanzen und womöglich auch Wildpflanzen entstanden, nicht jedoch die Yuka (Manihot esculenta), das Grundnahrungsmittel. Den Mythen zufolge ließ sich der Waldgott nicht mittels einer Waffe aus Metall oder einer Holzkeule umbringen, jedoch mittels der Pflanze Waruma (Ischnosiphon spp.) oder deren Strunk, was in der Gegenwart jedoch nicht mehr möglich ist. Streifen des Waruma benützen die Indianer zum Flechten, sie stellen daraus unter anderem viele Gegenstände des Haushalts her, darunter solchen zur Verarbeitung der Yuka durch die Frauen, worüber es zahlreiche ethnographische Berichte gibt (z.B. Mattéi-Müller 1999; Roth 1924:355). Die Karihona konstruieren in ihren mythischen Erzählungen somit einen Gegensatz, eine Opposition, zwischen der Yuka, dem Waruma, den Frauen, dem häuslichen Leben, all dem stellen sie den Itutari gegenüber, den Herren des Waldes, der Wildnis.
Übersetzer lateinamerikanischer Literatur, z.B. der Werke von Mario Vargas Llosa, wissen das Wort ‚Yuca‘, das ein Knollengewächs benennt, nicht als Synonym von ‚Maniok‘ einzuordnen und übersetzen es durch Yucca, eine Palmlilie, beliebt als Zimmerpflanze.
Ein Treffen mit dem Itutari ist für normale Menschen lebensgefährlich, nur Schamanen können sich mit ihm auseinander setzen, was in seinem bösartigen, menschenfeindlichen Charakter begründet ist. Er packt er seine Opfer bei der Brust, reißt diese auf und saugt das Blut aus, hieß es einmal. Früher kam es vor, dass ihn ein Mann in der Ferne in der Gestalt einer Frau erblickte, die sich ihr langes Haar kämmt. Merkte der Itutari, dass er beobachtet worden war, erhob sich ein kräftiger Sturm und der Betreffende erkrankte, erlitt z.B. Schwindelanfälle, musste sich erbrechen, begann zu fiebern.
Beim Besuch der Stiefmutter von M. Mora, der alten Isabel, wollte ich sie auch über den Itutarü befragen. Doch da zogen dunkle Wolken auf und ein kräftiger Wind schüttelte die Bäume. Die bejahrte Frau zeigte sich unwillig, auf das Thema einzugehen, war es doch offensichtlich, dass ich durch meine vorlauten Fragen den Itutarü in die Nähe gelockt hatte und es unklug wäre, ihn weiter zu reizen. Stürme stellen im Allgemeinen eine Ankündigung für ein- bis zweistündige Regengüsse dar, so typisch für die Region am oberen Rio Vaupés. Manchmal setzt aber nur ein Sturm ein und der erwartete Regen bleibt aus. Dann mag man erfahren, dass er in der Umgebung niedergegangen ist.
In früheren Zeiten raubte der Iturari auch Frauen, meinte Felix (6.10.70.). Als M. Mora behauptete, heutzutage treffe man nicht mehr auf den Itutari, konterte Felix mit einem Erlebnis: Der Itutari vermag Personen sogar am helllichten Tag völlig zu verwirren. Er selbst, Ismael und zwei andere hielten sich im Wald auf, nahe eines Urwaldpfades, nahe eines Baches, und plötzlich fanden sie diesen Weg nicht mehr. Ein kräftiger Sturm kam auf, der Bäume umzuwerfen, zu entwurzeln drohte, doch es regnete nicht. Seine Schlussfolgerung, dass dies nur durch die Nähe des Itutari in unmittelbarer Umgebung zu erklären sei, überließ Felix den Zuhörern. – Man mag sich selbstverständlich fragen, ob der Sturm die Vier nicht so aus der Fassung brachte, dass sie von der Anwesenheit des Numen überzeugt waren und ihre Angst sie blind machte, weshalb sie den breiten Pfad nicht mehr wahrnahmen.
Schamanen verfügen als einzige über das nötige Wissen, um bei einer Begegnung mit dem Itutari keinen Schaden oder Nachteile zu erleiden, sie vermögen ihn sogar zu veranlassen, den Menschen Jagdwild zu senden. Durch das Trinken halluzinogener Mittel kann ein Schamane eine visionäre Reise antreten und auf diese Weise auf den Waldgott zu treffen. In dem Gespräch mit dem Itutari überzeugt ihn nun der Schamane, für einige Zeit Wildschweine, Affen und andere seiner Tiere in die Nähe der menschlichen Siedlung zu schicken, damit das Wild nicht in erst auf langen Märschen durch den Wald zu suchen ist, sondern ohne große Mühe erlegt werden kann. Die Karihona bezeichnen den Itutari als yumu oder tamuru des Wildes, als ‚Vater‘ oder ‚Großvater‘, mit der Implikation ‚Herr‘ im Sinne von ‚Eigentümer‘. Der Waldgott holt die Tiere später wieder ab und führt sie in ihre Wohngebiete zurück, wo sie in Gemeinschaftshäusern leben, hieß es einmal (4.5.71).
Die Beziehung dieses Herrn der Tiere mit dem Wild ist allerdings nicht von Besitzdenken bzw. von Eifersucht geprägt. Auf meine Frage, ob der Itutari nicht über den Abschuss seiner Tiere verärgert sei, verstanden mich meine Gesprächspartner in Puerto Nare zuerst gar nicht. Ich führte als Beispiel an, ein Besitzer von Haustieren werde zornig, wenn ein Fremder seine Tiere töte, worauf mit Bestimmtheit erklärt wurde, dies sei nicht die Einstellung des Waldgottes. Den Karihona lag also die Vorstellung ferne, die Menschen müssten den Herrn der Tiere für das Erlegen von Wild durch eine Gabe versöhnen, oder ihm bestimmte Teile der Jagdbeute zurück geben, wie z.B. die Haut oder die Knochen. Der Itutari kümmert sich nicht weiter um die Tiere, hieß es, er sei zwar deren Besitzer, nicht aber deren Beschützer oder Heger.
Das Thema der Zerstörung des Alten, um Neues entstehen zu lassen, das in den Mythen über den Itutari zur Sprache kommt, also das Stirb und Werde, ist ein beliebtes Motiv in Mythen (s. z.B. Jensen 1965 ->CA; 1991 My+K). Hinter diesem Topos, hinter diesem Motivs steht das Verlangen der Menschen, die lästige Vielfalt der Welt zu reduzieren, die Fülle der Realität oder der Realitäten auf weniges Grundsätzliche zurück zu führen, selbst wenn noch nicht das ‚Erste Eine‘ Plotins anvisiert wird. Naturwissenschaftler sind glücklich über die Entdeckung der DNS, die Physiker suchen 2016 immer noch nach der Weltformel.
Die Umkehr dieser menschlichen Sucht nach Einheit ist die Erkenntnis, dass die gleichen Phänomene von unterschiedlichen Personen bzw. unterschiedlichen Wesen mit unterschiedlichen Bedeutungen versehen werden, was in der Ethnologie unter dem Stichwort ‚Perspektivismus‘ diskutiert wurde, [z.T. auf hanebüchene Weise]. Die Indianer behandeln dieses Thema nicht anhand von Berichten über ihre von Nachbarvölkern, sondern gerne anhand von Tieren oder Numina, was für sie nicht des Witzes entbehrt. Ich habe dies seinerzeit die ‚Exotik der Tiere‘ genannt; in Erzählungen der Karihona z.B. bezeichnen Geier das Aas als See und die Würmer darin als Fische und ein Tapir bezeichnet grüne Ananas als reif und umgekehrt (Schindler 1979: 147; vgl. dazu Maturana/Varela 1984; 1987; 2009).
In Puerto Nare waren die Meinungen darüber geteilt, ob es nur einen Itutari gibt oder mehrere, ob die Figuren dieses Waldgottes in den einzelnen Erzählungen miteinander gleich zu setzen sind, oder ob der mythische Itutari mit dem Numen identisch ist, dem man in der Gegenwart im Wald begegnet, falls man Pech hat. So meinten Felix und José Marin (28.11. 70.), der Itutari der Erzählungen gehört zwar dem Typ Itutari an, er sei jedoch nicht mit dem gegenwärtigen Itutari identisch, der Menschen im Wald in die Irre lockt, indem er ihre Sinne benebelt. Man mag allerdings seine Zweifel haben, ob sich die Karihona die Frage nach Mono-Itutarismus oder Poly-Itutarismus überhaupt gestellt hatten, bevor ich sie stellte.
Die Karihona nannten nicht nur den Waldgott itutari, sondern ebenso eine Insektenart, die Gottesanbeterin. Als ich die Indianer von Puerto Nare darauf hinwies, bestätigten sie zwar die Tatsache, vermittelten jedoch keineswegs den Eindruck, dies sei bemerkenswert oder bedenkenswert. Mit unseren Worten, es handelt sich um zwei Homonyme, zwei Äquivokationen, ein Wort mit zwei verschiedenen Begriffen. Die Gottesanbeterin lebt im Wald, itu, und sieht einem Blatt, ari, ähnlich. Naheliegende Erklärungen meiner Gesprächspartner blieben aus, etwa der Art, das Insekt sei ein Tier, in das sich der Waldgott gerne verwandle, oder es sei sein ‚Haustier‘ oder ‚Totem‘, was immer das auch besagen würde.
Daniel standing between two lions or grasping/strangling two lions is a very common motif in French Romanesque churches symbolising the defeat of evil.
In our oral tradition (in Québec) people that have indigenous ancestors will sometimes have what we call an ''animal totem''. We know it is this animal when it comes in a very vivid dream when we are in our twenties. In the dream (dream at night...not day dreaming) it is seen as a revelation. It is there to help us focus on its qualities that we are supposed to have as well... Oral traditions are sometimes more present and have more impact than written evidence on the people.
Hi Isabelle & Allan: While dating pictographs in interior British Columbia, I learned more about animal totems, vision quests and meeting real shamans. Some areas that I hiked in to were very remote - ideal places where a lone teenager seeking his (her) animal spirit after fasting for days would find it. And it would stay with them for the rest of their lives.

There are remarkable parallels between the work of Esther Jacobsen-Tepfer and my own studies in the Coso Range of eastern California.
Esther is studying the rock art in the Altai, Mongolia and Russia and China... Specifically the area of the Evenk and Tungusic peoples.
Many similarities in deep time to pre-shamanic bird-women and archaic culture heroes that are metaphorically represented in ways that one might intuit are life affirming, earth and resource renewal intentions - rain, seeds, baskets, digging sticks, seed beaters, birthing women and more. We are just now beginning to recognize the role of gender and the feminine influences in this ancient art form of the rock drawings located in the southwestern corner of the Great Basin in the western Mojave Desert.

In Hopi oral traditions there is the narrative of the creation of the YaYa Ceremony. Within this narrative the protagonist (culture hero) learns that his father is a member of the Bighorn Sheep Clan who are all animals who can transform into humans. The Clan was in need of protection from an ever increasing human population and sought out a baby girl who upon maturity became Mistress of the Animals and their supernatural protector.

In many Slovak folk tales plays a key role wise, talking horse; but there is no linking of this prehistoric subject with Christianity, as for example in the context of Easter traditions in Slovakia. I suppose that the formulation of the question is misleading. In many dictionaries the term depiction is explained with words like description etc, but you probably mean visual art pictures,not oral literature etc. About oral literature there are many studies in our bibliothecs.

My emphasis is on sacred narrative and pictography. I am attempting to interpret and find analogs for archaeological materials (artifacts and rock art imagery) within the ethnographic record. Hence, oral traditions and emic explanations of the cosmology and conceptualization of the animal master/mistress supernatural being is of great interest.
if I may return to Patrick Martin's answer, and the earlier one about Uruk seals, the same image appears in Egyptian art contemporary to the Uruk material, for example the Gebel el Arak knife handle and in Tomb 100 at Hierakonopolis. I too have seen these sort of images interpreted as the 'Lord of Animals', however, other aspects of Egyptian art of the Naqada period must cast doubt on the universality of said attributions. Here it is common to depict humans in animal form, most famously on the Narmer Palette where the king is depicted as both a victorious falcon and a rampaging bull tearing down a walled city. In light of this is it not possible that the depiction is actually representing depiction over human enemies rather than a religious adoration of a master of animals.
There is more recent usage of this in particular the poem the Lion and the Unicorn where the two animals used to symbolise the competing houses of Hanover and Stuart.
If we were to accept all images showing scenes of humans triumphing over wild animals as showing a deity we would be overwhelmed with them since hunting is such a popular activity.
Alan, I recently was told about the "Master of the Animals" among Yucatec Maya folks I've been working with since ~2005. The story was in relation to a very prodigious hunter who had a bicycle accident that left him a paraplegic over 2 decades ago. A couple men, and the individual himself, felt that part of the reason for his accident was that he had hunted and killed too many animals, and this was a castigation from the Master of the Animals. The oral tale I was told was that a hunter (not the individual injured, this is the only story I have heard about the Master of the Animals) was out hunting and came a cross a cave that he entered. Inside there were hundreds of injured animals in various states of recovery. The hunter did not understand what he was seeing, and an unspecified form of being appeared and told him that these were all the animals he had injured but not killed while hunting. The Master of the Animals explained that he was treating them, and expressed his displeasure with the hunter for his carelessness that had resulted in so many injured creatures. The hunter took the chastisement to heart, and apparently at least tried to be more responsible in his hunting. As you know, I always look for the real-world implications of such tales and do not generally believe in many anthropological perspectives that assign oral literature to myth. I think this example clearly states Maya concern with sloppy hunting and potential effects on local animal populations, something more important to sedentary agriculturalists than to hunter-gatherers. Such problems also may be more aggravated since the introduction of firearms compared with traditional projectile weaponry. This story is congruent with a few ethnographic descriptions I have read about this character, but I'm unsure how similar the views are on this being to those inferred from Maya archaeological texts. I do not have any information about potential depictions of the Master of the Animals among modern Maya, the cave scenario is the most common thread to the reporting I have seen. Sorry to be late to this string, but your term "Master of the Animals" grabbed my attention in relation to this recent information from the Maya farmers I work with in coordination with Karen Kramer's research (Univ of Utah).

Mit einem Tierbezwinger und zwei Schlangen, zwei wildkatzenähnlichen Tieren, zwei Vögeln sowie zwei weiteren Kleintieren ist z.B. ein Rundsiegel aus Tell Asmar vom dritten vorchristlichen Jahrtausend, und ein Stempel der Susiana wohl der mesopotamischen Obed-Kultur zuordenbar, bekannt, neben Darstellungen mit der ziegenköpfigen Göttin als Herrin der Tiere.[1] Hinzu kommt jetzt bei der Darstellung im Industal neben einer Kopfbedeckung mit Ziegenhörnern der meditative Sitz.[2] Hier findet sich eine Verbindung zu den ebenso bekannten, zahlreichen, andere Maßnahmen begleitenden Versuchen auf weiteren spirituellen Wegen über Amulette mit geschriebenen oder auch zu rezitierenden Beschwörungen und Gebeten die anderen Sphären positiv zu stimmen, damit sie eine Entschuldigung für menschliche Verfehlungen akzeptierten und eine Heilung zuließen.

The motif of the Master of Animals may be very old. According to Jean-Loïc Le Quellec and Bernard Sergent (2017, Dictionnaire critique de mythologie, Paris : CNRS éditions : 749),"the distribution of this theme (Eurasia, Africa, America) and its connection to the hunting world suggest a Palaeolithic origin". Images of women or vulva in European Palaeolithic rock art could be reminiscent of a mistress of animals, whose sex corresponds to the cave (Christ 1987, http://www.encyclopedia.com/environment/encyclopedias-almanacs-transcripts-and-maps/lady-animals). The antiquity of the belief would explain its diffusion.. A more recent image of an animal/feline mistress would be a statuette dating from 6500 to 5650 AEC in Çatalhöyük (Turkey) (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%87atalh%C3%B6y%C3%Bck#/media/File:Ankara_Muzeum_B20-10.jpg).

Wow. I need to take some time and digest this rather wide ranging and deep dive into the mysteries of the Lord/Lady of the Animals (Master/Mistress of the Animals)
Alan, Animal Master, or Hunt Master, is one of the frequently expressed features, of one of the sixteen main archetypes; type 10 Teacher. Its mythic and cosmic analogy is the celestial season or ‘sign’ Libra, archetypal autumn, and ecliptic constellation Bootes arm, Corona (Crown).
I have data on the types from structuralist anthropology analyses of a large sample of artworks and rock art works, and building sites. The types are also expressed in cultural sets in some other media (calendar, myth, poems, ritual, emblems, icons, alphabets, pantheons).
In any sample of fifty or more artworks, building sites, or cultural sets; that contain eleven or more characters in context; at least twelve, more usually sixteen characters, would be in a periphery in the standard sequence; and with their eyes or focal points (in spatial media) on an axial grid; formed by pairs of standard opposites; around five central or polar features expressed by limb joints or junctures, analogous to three cosmology planes; oriented in a certain relationship to the positions of midsummer and spring in the Age of the formation of the local culture (Furter 2014. Furter 2016). The structure has five levels.
The first level, of character, includes sixteen optional clusters of features, each of which appears at a specific average percentage. Here is the cluster for the type relevant to your query:
Type 10 Teacher; W-shape 44% (arm/s up 28%), staff 36%, hunt-master 24%, guard 20%, metal 14%, market 14%, disc 12%, council 11%, snake 8%, ecology 8%, school 6%, carousel 4%, canid 4%, horns 4%, fish 4%, [more features may be isolated, or some of these terms and thus percentages may be re-defined].
The mindprint model of subconscious expression of archetypal features innate to our environment and species, is highly predictive of about 100 features of artefacts in several media (of which a general average of 60% is usually expressed), and the model is thus highly testable.

I believe most of the answers to your question, and to comments on your question, are implied in these findings of our subconscious behaviour; no longer ‘unconscious’, since we now have some conscious access to our innate and collective behaviour. On a semi-conscious level, we suffer guilt for depleting nature (see Endicott et al); and we use the standard, global core content of culture for bonding, appropriation, and exploitation of our own and others’ resources.
