I am writing a paper on the role of senior management staff and if they contribute to the student academic performance whether explicitly or implicitly. They are often more concerned with administration than instruction.
May I take this opportunity to put a few words to your question on the role of senior management staff to student academic achievement.I am a Director of a college and I teach not one subject but three subjects .Periodontics, oral pathology and community dentistry.I have two text books in periodontology and community dentistry.Incidentally I have four decades of dedicated hard work.I have been examiner to many universities in India and abroad for both undergraduates and post graduate students.Let me put it this way.I could have earned in private practice, but the teaching is in the blood .This has led to make me learn and do teaching as my first choice not by compulsion but by fire and interest.
The present day teachers are as I call them as brief case doctors .They commute for money,do spend the time in the college for recreation or as picnic,to get away from their busy practice .Whether they are senior or junior it is the same saga of time pass
Today we need teachers who are devoted and dedicated .The selection of teachers must be done as the teachers are going to shape the destiny of the students. If the teacher is good and I sure his students ill also be good. The senior teacher does come to institutions fro a few hours in a week and has been only for name sake.He has very less role as most of the clinical work and teaching is done by the subordinates. On the contrary ,if he is Post graduate teacher he expects a bunch of students both boys and girls to celebrate parties ,birthdays and provide good mementoes for every occasion.
It is need of the hour that the role of teachers is there .The senior teachers have to provide lectures, seminars, and encourage the bad students, to indulge in hard work by setting target programs weekly..The department must have a record of work done by each staff member in teaching ,clinical treatment , and seminars conducted .A monthly report must be submitted to the Principal .The work must be counter assessed by the students .A few students must give a report of the teachers methods and contents and regularity of teaching. The impact strength of the teaching of teachers will be appreciated by students. The role of teacher is to generate interest in the minds of students of the importance of aiming at getting highest marks not by unfair means or by influence .Today there is very stiff competition .Just ordinary B.D.S or M.B.B.S is not the end of the journey. They have to obtain very good marks so that they can compete in the exams for entrance test for P.G..
Students could undertake sebatical work during the holidays to encourage scientific writing.
The role of teacher is not to bow to management or parents for evaluation marks.I am sure there is a change required .Every one can not be a good teacher ,he may be a good clinician but he may not be a good teacher.I am sure this issue must be taken seriously .Give back to the world what you take from others .This give and take policy is the best answer
Senior management staff - which must include the leaders of institutions - have the same requirement as all others in a learning community. They have to ask themselves several questions about their roles and to accept that senior roles can rarely be defined as solely management or soley leadership or pedagogic. The same logic applies to their position within teams at their colleges, Universities or schools.
From experience, those who do not accept that there are areas of overlap rarely make a success of any of the roles they occupy. Teachers manage and should lead or al least have some capacity to lead, encouraged by their supervisors or other team members. Managers should also lead their departments at least and pedagogic leaders often find themselves performing extensive management roles which are not directly seen as leading or even affecting learning.
The answer is to have an understanding of what makes a leader in a learning envirinment and how capacity for leadership can be built along with a culture of flexibility and sustainability to the benefit of learners.
Like Dr. Rao, I am also a senior manager who teaches a good deal of the time having been Academy Director and Head of School and I hope to continue to do so.
The role of senior management staff, and in particular the principal, is to to meet the school’s promise to parents and ensure the highest quality of of teaching and learning to all groups of students. To achieve that, senior management staff have to have a clear vision of the journey to excellence and communicate that to all skateholders. Emphasis should be place on recruiting and retaining the best teachers, continuous meaningful professional development, and meeting the needs of all students. Senior management staff need to visit classrooms and gather evidence on students' achievement against adopted curriculum standards while ascertaining that the best teaching practices are implemented in all learning activities.
