As mentioned there is a huge potential for nanotechnology in sustainable agriculture. We have done research related to controlled-release fertilizers under the nanotechnology domain which commercialized in Sri Lanka.

@ Satyapal, there are enormous future scope to apply nanotechnology in agriculture. For example, you may apply as nano nutrient/fertilizer, nano-pesticides, nano-herbicides, nano-sensors, nano-tracers, nano-emulsions, nanoscale carriers, quantum dots, nano-coating, nano-filters, nano-magnets, photocatalyst, precision agriculture, smart delivery system, nano-lignocellulose, and so on...

Indeed the future of nanotechnology in agriculture is bright. More needs to be though!

The production, processing and distribution of food are all sectors of activity where nanotechnologies can potentially be applied: The improvement of the effectiveness of pesticides, either by nano-preparations, nano-droplet emulsions, nano-encapsulation of pesticides, controlled release, etc., can be applied to the production, processing and distribution of food. There will be greater ease of application and the necessary dosages will be more precise. Furthermore, with the application of these processes, it will be possible to reduce the contact of workers with the active ingredients increasing the effectiveness of fertilizers and organic fertilizers, making them more resistant to weather conditions. It is possible, for example, to use intelligent dust designed with nanosensors. This dust ensures better control of humidity and temperature. Finally, it is also possible to carry out treatments for the depollution of agricultural residues (water, soil and air), for example by installing nanofilters and nanosensors.

In the food sector we may use nanotechnology for food processing through heat and mass transfer, nanoscale reaction engineering, molecular synthesis and nanobiotechnology. Nanotechnology can be use to formulation, packaging and delivery of food products. Nanosensors and nanotracers can be use for food safety and biosecurity.

Nanotechnology will be support to ready to eat foods and maintained the nutrions for long time. I state that Natnotechnology could be used as a tool to discover micro deficiencies in the plants and identification of byproducts in future.

Nano particles such as nono silver and others can be used for controlling plant diseases.

Nanomaterials in agriculture can have several applications:

-to fight against bacterial and fungal pathogens (nano-pesticides)

-to inhibit the growth of unwanted plants (nano-herbicides)

-to promote the growth of desired plants (nano-fertilizers)

I think the technology based on nano-engineering is yet in infancy, and it will take time for its validation and application.

Nanotechnology can bring a tremendous change in agriculture by controlling the use of hazardous chemical pesticides leading to environmental pollution. The use of such pesticides which are prepared from biopolymeric nanoparticles can increase absorption of nutrients from soil ,can be eco friendly and can lead to increase in crop production and soil fertility. The nanoparticles prepared using minerals have also been reported to increase soil fertility.

@ Satyapal, out of three human studies, only one showed a passage of inhaled nanoparticles into the bloodstream. Materials which by themselves are not very harmful could be toxic if they are inhaled in the form of nanoparticles. The effects of inhaled nanoparticles in the body may include lung inflammation and heart problems. The toxicity of nanoparticles depends on their size, shape and chemical composition, but also on the composition of any chemicals adsorbed onto their surfaces. However, the surfaces of nanoparticles can be modified to make them less harmful to health.

Nanotechnology will provide the supplementary elements to reduce the cost of production in cultivation of multiple crop.

Nanomaterials can be used in plant root germination, nano-pharmaceuticals, nano-pesticides, and nano-chemical herbicides, as we have applied some of them as fertilizers on some crops such as yellow corn, wheat and others.
