Hi Md, then lower fixed carbon is best because you have more that can volatilize to syngas. Personally I always want higher fixed carbon to maximize biochar yield (and carbon sequestration). Obviously this is all feed-stock dependent.

Fixed carbon is the solid combustible residue that remains after a coal particle is heated and the volatile matter is expelled. The fixed-carbon content of a coal is determined by subtracting the percentages of moisture, volatile matter, and ash from a sample.

It is important and the amount of fixed carbon (eg wood contains more carbon and has a calorific value greater than herbaceous plants) but important period of carbon storage in biomass. A tree a carbon fixed by photosynthesis can be stored a few hundred years in a grassy plant can be saved only some years.The decomposition and mineralization processes are much faster if demic herbal plants in the case of wood.

A high fixed carbon content is an indication of recalcitrance of the biochar. this simply means the biochar have resistance to either aerobic or anaerobic degradation

I think, it depends a lot on the feedstock, coal, wood or other biomass and on the process you use for gasification and on the quality of gas you need (eg. for heat or electricity or chemicals).

The volatiles are easier to gasify, but the carbon will give you easier control to the CO/CO2 and H2 ratio.

I think you'll have to be more specific to get more helpful advise.

The one with 48% because HHV is directly promotional to the carbon content.

well, first of all, 46 or 48 mass percent fixed carbon is to low for a biochar. Some untreted stem woods have a carbon content of up to 50 % on dry basis.

For burning I think (with same HHV) you should look at the ash, because it will cause the problems. Assuming low water content of a biochar and less than 50 % fixed carbon you must have a very high ash content.

I would suggest burning a biochar sample with only little solid fire starter to see which caches fire more easily and check the ash for slagging.

Fixed carbon content gives information of the amount of char formation in the thermochemical conversion process. It is the solid combustible residue that remains after the volatiles matter drive off. Higher the fixed carbon, the higher the char production in the thermochemical conversion process as a product yield.
