Albendazole is known to act on outer membrane of the cyst and causes disruption or destruction which may lead to spillage of contents of hydatid cyst causing anaphylaxis and embolisation.
Yes, there is relationship between albendazole and disruption or destruction of hydatid cardiac cyst, case report recently present in American Journal of BioMedicine.
Thanks for the reply....should the use of albenazole be decided according to the location of cardiac hydatic cyst whether it is in the pericardiac cavity or occupying the lv myocardium...why not to use it post-operatively only then and avoid using it pre-operatively as it is given for a long duration.
Albendazole should be started 1 to 2 weeks before surgery to have its antihelmenthic effect on the scolices. It is known to increase the chances of rupture but that occurs only if you delay the surgery beyond that period. I have operated more than 600 patients having hydatid cysts of lung( including hydatid cyst of aorta, intra-pericardial hydatid) . Our protocol is to start Albendazole 2 weeks before surgery and continue it along with praziquintal four weeks after surgery. I have not faced the problem of rupture in the preoperative period
