There are several conferences with abstracts published in a souvenir, which will be lost in the long run. Is it a better idea to publish conference abstracts in an indexed journal where they will be stored for the long-term and visible to the scientific world?

Sometimes the abstracts are interesting enough that they are cited in full text publications. I myself have a few citations of that kind, so it means for me that other researchres did read my abstracts.
probably better in an indexed journal, but it isn't necessarily "lost" if not. For example the Cochrane Library will examine conference abstracts for their reviews oftentimes.
I agree with you that it is essential that conference abstracts should be published in their own journal . Since these would be published as abstracts , the reader would know that these are abstracts & can assess their validity . In a developing country , this has significance because data on many diseases from various parts of the country become available to the researcher . It is unfortunate that many of these abstracts do not get published in detail as an article, but there may be many reasons for this & one important reason is the non availability of of many peer reviewed journals in our country. I have been working on leptospirosis in India for the past 3 decades & I have noted that data are not available from many states & I look at abstracts of various conferences to get at least the minimum data on this common , but under reported & under diagnosed disease . I appreciate RG for having datasets , where unpublished data ( such as conference abstracts ) can be made available for readers to view these important contributions .
