the Internet of Things (IoT) can be viewed as an extension of the "classical" Internet with various sensor and actuator networks, in particular with different types of Wireless Sensor Networks.

The "classical" Internet is indeed a worldwide networking (interconnection) of different networks with the protocol IP. And the extension of this interconnection of networks by connecting various sensor and actuator networks (i.e. the networks with different things) leads to the genesis of a special and additional internet extension called Internet of Things. For this reason, there is a "great similarity" between IoT and Interconnection of  Networks.

 This consideration and definition of the IoT can be found in the Recommendation ITU-T Y.2060 (06/2012). There IoT is defined as follows:

„Internet of Things (IoT): A global infrastructure for the information society, enabling advanced services by interconnecting (physical and virtual) things based on, existing and evolving, interoperable information and communication technologies.”

 A general multi-layer model of IoT is presented in the recommendation TU-T Y.2060.

IoT refers to the networked interconnection of everyday objects, which are often equipped with ubiquitous intelligence. IoT will increase the ubiquity of the Internet by integrating every object for interaction via embedded systems, which leads to a highly distributed network of devices communicating with human beings as well as other devices. The above two answers talk about deep details of IOT.

I would like to simplify first this to a very basic level.

The first definition that we come across for networks is connection of devices for information exchange over guided or guided media. Then comes Internet ... as we know now that it is interconnection of similar or dissimilar networks. Then we came across definitions like Telecom networks and generations of telecom networks like 2G,3G,4G and now we are heading to 5G. with 3G came the idea of sending data alongwith audio so MIMO became a reality and MPLS was put to use and 4G ensures all activity that happens on 3G devices can happen in 4G even if devices are moving at a speed of 40 km/h .

Now in light of all above we need to break IOT into two parts. Core Networks and Access Networks. Access networtk is that network that provided connectivity to the last mile of the network.or in other words from where no information is fed to any next hop. Yes the last mile can send information to the source from where it is getting the connectivity for last mile delivery.

Then comes the core network which shall qualify as that network which has all the functionalities that can provide the services to the last mile device for which the IOT application was devised. 

IOT gateways shall provide interconnection between these core and access networks.

Now let's try to understand this access network by some examples.

1. A cab fitted with GPS Device is the last mile for GPS services via which it is controlled by the cab company.

2. A 3G/4G Sim enabled smart watch that captures users pulse and body temperature to send it to the health care system

Now try to spot the similarity. GPS device on Cab or Smart Watch are the last mile device. They are provided with services via a last mile connectivity using GPS Protocol in cab and 3G(HSPA)/4G(LTE)Protocol. 

Let's understand the core network with the help of above first examples.

1.The Cab woukd be connected to application server in cloud where the server would be running production code for Cab App where it would capture various parametrs related to a cab and cab rider frfom the GPS enabled device which rums an application on top of it. So to elaborate that GPS device is an embedded system that has GPS loaction sensor,Processor,Wlan port and an Operating system on top of it to do this task. This device has a secured signin onto Cab Services gateway and the gateway connects it to the core networks comprising of Cloud based Web servers,Database servers,Payment gateways and what not. 

What is the similarity between the Internet of Things and Interconnection Networks?

The IOT is interconnection of core and access networks. Access networks shall work on 3g/4G, LTE,802.xx in wireless mode and on 802.3 on guided media modes.

IOT gateway is needed to provide access to core for all the transactional business. So yes IOT exploits Interconnection networks.

Is the Internet of Things a Kind/Subset of interconnection networks?

Yes IOT is a kind of Intercoonection network. No it is not Subset.

Can the Interconnection Networks Research Group work on the subject of the Internet of Things?

Yes. wihout a doubt.

Coming back to your question

The term "interconnection network" (IN)  was firstly applied to the network inside a parallel computer which  differs from the most traditional to a computer network in that is contained in a given space and has short links; it connects nodes inside a usually homogenous system  instead of connecting diverse computers.  Thus, most IN are very regular and have very simple protocols to reduce latency between nodes. Networks-on-chip are in many cases extension to IN designs inside a multicore system.  

IOT  is related to more generic communication technologies that spread over large distances.   Of course, anyone with good network knowledge can move from working on a network type to another different type. However, it makes more sense for groups working with sensors or mobile networks to cover IoT as the design issues are closer.
