Bend test is generally recommended for welded joints as per ASME section 9. But my application is consisting of weld overlay samples. If i need to compare two different materials for weld overlay application then bend test is required or not?
If yes then Can anyone suggest the dimension and the procedure? I am referring ASME section 9 though. Enlighten your views!
I would recommend side bend testing to compare two overaly materials.
Some tips on the procedure (Ref: AWS discussion forum):
Three side bend specimens shall be machined from the test piece heat treated to the minimum PWHT condition. Specimens shall be oriented transverse to the welding direction. 1) Thickness of the specimens shall be twice the thickness of the deposited overlay and shall contain the entire overlay thickness, bond line, and a thickness of the base material equal to the thickness of the deposited overlay. 2) Width of the specimen shall be a minimum of 0.75 inches. 3) Length of the specimens shall be greater two inches . 4) Machined specimen shall be bent around a 0.5-inch diameter mandrel with a bead-to-bead bond line at the middle of the bend. 5) No cracks or lack of fusion defects are acceptable on the convex surface

Thank you for your valuable answer. I will look forward to follow this method. However, I assume that there is no standard particularly available for weld overlay bend test.
Am I right, Sir? If not then How can I justify this method? Kindly, enlighten your views on this.

I think you are right about the non availability of standard for bend testing of weld overlay. The available standard refers only about visual inspection, LPT, hardness, macro, and chemical analysis. However, I should mention that I am not the right person to comment on the PQR or WPS using ASME section IX because it has been a while since I worked in this area. My comment on side bend testing of weld overlay is based on my previous work that we performed in L&T Powai (not Surat!) a looong time ago!
How to justify the testing method: You can refer to QW 452.1, 451.1, 453, 462.5 etc and say that your procedure is an extension of the existing standards. The side bend test strains the substrate and overlay materials equally. Therefore, comparison between different materials becomes easy!

Glad to know that sir, I am also working for the same organisation (L&T Surat) for my PhD work currently.
And yes sir I completely agree on your comment and justification part. I have found the same data in ASME section IX (QW-453 and others which are mentioned by you). Further, I can say that this method will be helpful to find the strength and soundness of welding overlay materials and chosen parameters for the same (I guess that is why PQR is needed to establish new process)
However, it is very difficult to apply on very hard weld overlay materials as they are prone to be cracked I assume. Still I will try to proceed with the same as it is code requirement. And for comparisons, we can always go with service conditions and their requirement for testing such as corrosion, wear etc.
