The main problem is that the Boron is one of the hardest element on earth with a very high evaporation temperature, the only good thing is it is black so it absorpt must the light.
You are correct, a pulsed laser should be used; I do not think a 20 Watt laser would do anything useful; you need a much higher power; you usually get that by using very short laser pulses: microsecond, nanosecond, even picosecond time duration, in order to do laser ablation. Years ago (maybe like 30-40) you could use a CO2 or Nd:YAG laser for such things, maybe a Ti:saphire later on. But this is a very vast subject matter in itself.
