I think , lower input-use-efficiency conditioned by perennially moisture deficit conditions account heavily for low proctivity of date palm, being a predominant crop of arid regions.Salinity plus moisture is another doubly difficult to handle abiotic stress...
The major reasons for low productivity of date palm are:
1. Low quality of date palm varieties , for example in Oman (a major date palm cultivating country) the productivity is poor due to poor quality of offshoots.
2. Mainly cultivated in alkaline and saline soils but in such soils its growth and productivity are greatly reduced.
3. Poor marketing, almost all countries growing date palm have marketing constraints.
4. Pest and diseases, for example 30% loss of production in Arab countries are due to attack of pest and diseases especially Red Palm Weevil.
5. Limits of micro-propagation
6. Tissue-cultured plant-lets are more emphasized on rapidly expand planting, less attention on developed new varieties, increased fruit yield and resistance to pests and pathogens.

Commercial date production necessitates artificial pollination which ensures good fertilisation and overcomes disadvantages of dichogamy and also reduces the number of male palms. The male/female ratio in a modern plantation is 1/50 (2 %). Artificial pollination could be realised according to a traditional method or by using a mechanised device.
How can we overcome the constraints in existing varieties and soil salinity in date palm ?
