To prepare graduates who can fill the skills gaps existing in both industry and institutions in their respective fields and moreover, use these skills to solve complex problems as well as innovate new solutions in increasing competitive advantage for their respective employers. These resources point to trends and issues for which education has to prepare students, which I hope will be helpful in contributing to this discussion.

In line with Debra Sharon Ferdinand-James 's answer, I think that the role of higher education today is not only to develop students’ knowledge expertise but also to increase their readiness for the labor market.
I think we need to rethink the role of higher education given how much can be done by automation these days. A narrow focus on the existing labor market is limiting, and has the risk of reducing our humanity to that of production and consumption. Thinking across disciplinary boundaries, becoming aware of + unpacking the consequences of + challenging existing assumptions would be my first response.
