We all believe that we know the features of a "good" society. However, when we have to provide specific reasons, we are stuck. What protocol or procedure do we use to develop a shared vision (and consensus) of a "good" society? What would be the characteristics of such a society? How would we be able to recognize a "good" society when we see one, experience one or live in one?
It is very interesting.
I think that, first of all, we should separate the terms "good" and "society". We should define "society", thus, to define the term good.
What does mean society? What is good society? Does the good concept the same for the west and east?
In short, I believe that a literature review about society definitions and the meaning of "good" is the first step.
Concerning consensus, I think that, primary, we can considerer:
1) The works of Arend Lijphart;
2) The works of Jürgen Habermas, e.g., "Moral consciousness and communicative theory".
Donizete Beck I do not know the works of Arend Lijphart. I tried to read Habermas in English and I found it very difficult. Perhaps it is easier to follow in German. We need a protocol that someone with some education can follow and understand. From an implementation point of view, it will be very difficult to get a consensus if you need a doctorate in the social sciences to qualify just to understand the meaning of the protocol. I am sorry to be so negative. For example, is it possible for you to summarize the key points of Habermas in 100 words or less?
It will probably be easiest if we live in one: you just feel happy and satisfied...now, seriously, I think equal ipportunity for everyone os the basos, but I don't think it has been achieved anywhere...
Hello Joseph, I think that this is one of the big questions not only raised in RG, but what people try to figure out. A 'good' society will be based on a particular ethics. Such ethics still need to further defined, but before this can be done, it might help to map some things that should be achieved: what makes a society 'good'? I give over to others in RG, and would get back soon.....
