What would it be, if I mix the carbon with the the Nickel precursor (such as Ni(NO3)2.6H2O) and do heating treatment in N2 environment (Carbonization / pyrolisis) followed by heating treatment in CO2 environment (physical activation) at T of 800 C for both heating treatment? I am preparing the composite electrode for supercapacitor containing the activated carbon and attempting to have NiO in the electrode composite.
1. Ni(NO3)2.6H2O gets adsorbed on carbon and is represented as:
[C + Ni(NO3)2.6H2O]-------- Adsorbed product
2. It loses water molecules so that the adsorbed product is now represented as
[C+ Ni(NO3)2].
3. The Ni(NO3)2 gets decomposed to NiO as:
2Ni(NO3)2------------------------- 2NiO +4NO2+O2
[ N2 is flushed to creat an inert gas atmosphere].
4. So now the adsorbed product can be represented as:[ C+NiO]
5. This reacts with CO2 to give:
[2C+NiO]+CO2-------- Ni +3CO
6. As it is a nonstoichiometric compound , the final product should be:
Ni+NiO + Traces of carbon which still remain in the interstial sites of Ni and NiO.
The answer given by Manohar looks fine to me. Nickle nitrate is easily decomposes at high temperature or heating in a microwave oven to give olive green NiO. This can react with carbon at the condition given to be reduced to Ni metal. As it is said, the conversion might not be complete. The XRD of the sample can help you a lot to see the production of either Ni or a mixture of Ni and NiO. You have to be careful that Ni must be kept under inert atmosphere to prevent it from oxidation to NiO in air and moisture. Why not trying to heat nickle nitrate mixed with carbon in a crucible on a hot plate to get NiO mixed with carbn?
