For large plants, the fundamental sap flow sensor tends to follow one of two basic designs: the thermal dissipation method (Granier, 1985) or the heat-pulse method (Burgess et al., 2001). What is the next step? What are the biggest limiting factors with the current sensor designs (e.g. price, power requirements, heterogeneity between sampling locations, representative measurements of individual species). Should sap flow remain measured thermometrically or is there a better proxy for transpiration/vegetation storage?
