Atsuete (Bixa Orellana) and Dragon fruit (Hylocereus) posses strong coloring characteristics within its ordinary use in the kitchen. From that viewpoint it might be a good substitute staining agent to stain a gram negative organism. However, attempts to use it as a substitute for Safranine O did not work. The color of atsuete and dragon fruit juice overwhelm the organism and obliterate any identifiable cellular part, whether it is gram positive or gram negative bacteria.
