Workshop is the most outdated, frequently used formal concept of Faculty development programs. What are the current trends of professional development , contextually rich activities?

The time starts now.....
I participated in successful seminars run by our teaching development centre.
The types of areas covered were:
- E-learning
- Innovation
- Approach to teaching
- Effective teaching
- Improvements to teaching
- Curriculum development
- Assessment
Depends on the purpose of the learning activity - to share new information (facts and figures) and develop an action plan, to implement a new practice or improve an existing practice, to develop skills, to change attitudes etc.
I find posing a question before the learning event so that people can prepare their thoughts and also providing a small amount of directed reading, then bring a mix of people together in a small group (under 10) (in-person or on-line or phone) and have a facilitator who leads the discussion of the question guiding through (somewhat depends on the topic and purpose): what is the problem? what is the treatment evidence? what is the positive of this course of action (treatment), what is the negative? (Cost, patient, skill needed etc) What do we do now? etc Clearly describe the question so that it can be discussed in 40 minutes.
This sounds like an academic essay question that you have been set. Is there a clear joint understanding of the term "workshop"?

@ Dr Becker: I agreed with you that professional development efforts are driven by purpose or goal set as their learning outcomes. The formal method of educational workshop is one of the most frequently adopted strategies of professional development. However the pattern of most of these workshop are more or less similar; my question was more about the innovation in these areas which transform the participant experience into more enriching experiential learning. I came across various formats as suggested by the RG colleagues.

Basically, 3 faculty are in the Triangle. They each attend 1 class session from their other 2 team mates. These are non-evaluatory; they simply watch and see what good pedagogical techniques their colleagues use. They then meet and reflect on them.
