I would be interested in any papers which look at the makeup of hydroponic effluent and analyze them for their potentially negative impact when discharged, whether it primarily is massive nutrient imbalances, pesticide residuals or whatever else the major factor might be. Thank you.

I just read through the paper but can not find anything about the makeup of the hydroponic effluent in the paper. I see something about the filtering capacity on the input side (which also is very interesting) but my primary interest here is around the composition of the hydroponic water that typically gets dumped after one growth cycle. Any papers/information you can point me to regarding this?

dear jonas, i think u should try indirect references.....eg........effect of effluents from lather industry/paper industry/tans & dyes .........etc. on ........................

One reason why I am shying away from indirect references is the risk of focusing on the wrong component due to a suboptimal reference and consequently missing the biggest lever. The danger of hydroponics effluent is being mentioned repeatedly in various informal channels but the details seem to be rather unstudied...
Dear Kun Li, thank you very much for that pointer. If eutrophication is the main challenge then this points towards an issue around nutrient balancing but not in intrinsic weakness of hydroponic growing or what would you say? Do you happen to have any papers in this direction by any chance?

I think more research is needed about it. One line of research could start with the identification of chemical substances used in hydroponics (fertilizers, phytohormones, pesticides, etc.) then will be necessary to analyze their presence in to the water effluents.
