I will be excited actually to collect and read the most controversial papers about the ubiquitous and pervasive computing fields. I am sure that there are a lot of interesting material to read but of course collecting a refined reading list (more or less) is not that easy for one researcher, this should be driven by the community for richer content. Such material could be also used I think by others and more importantly for a hot discussion at the ubiquitous seminars.
I think one nicely written and must read papers is "What next, ubicomp? celebrating an intellectual disappearing act" by Abowd published in UbiComp '12 this year. One of his major arguments in the paper that ubicomp as a niche research topic no longer makes sense; we must celebrate its “disappearance”. Moreover, you will also read "Ubicomp is dead! Long live (ubiquitous) computing!" which in my mind makes the paper a controversial one ;-)
He wrote that: "it is increasingly hard to identify what constitutes ubicomp research today, because it is hard to rule anything out as being unrelated to this current generation of computing."
He give a very nice overview over the field and its progress over the last 20+ years and project some of his ideas into the future "the fourth generation of computing".

This is another interesting one: "When Users “Do” the Ubicomp" by Antti Oulasvirta. Author argues that the real, present day (2008) ubicomp is fairly different from Weiser's vision.

Lots of the technologies are no longer niche, but the reality is that conferences, such as Ubicomp provide an opportunity for a community to gather that has a shared set of interests. When conferences get too general (and often too big) they kind of lose their edge and lack a focus.
