Thanks. 14 days is a frequently mentioned duration to define prolonged viral shedding (PVS)  for influenza. However, there are a number of papers defining PVS for shedding documented beyond day 7 after onset of symptoms. Detecting the virus on day 7 or 8 in a solid organ transplant recipient may prompt one to prolong treatment in the symptomatic patients and certainly take precautions to prevent virus spread to other susceptible hosts. In this point we certainly agree. Precautions should be taken as long as the infected patient are shedding and this may well go far beyond the day 7 or 14, even for several weeks in some patients. The frequency of PVS in different populations needs to be determined in order take preventive measures for prolonged durations. The definition used influences strongly the frequency of PVS, therefore a widely accepted definition would be useful. Is there consensus on the 14 day duration? Would someone opt for a shorter duration to define PVS for influenza virus infections?
