I am personally working with self-healing additive capable healing cracks in concrete up to 0,4 mm width. When concrete is in contact with water, cracks are filled with newly formed crystals. No bacteria.
Modern additives? I think it is more of modern construction, which basically is attempting to achieve high performance of concrete structures. In this regard, several additives, and admixtures, all aiming to improve the desired concrete properties are being utilised. Additives such as shrinkage reducing, corrosion-inhibiting, modern and efficient super-plasticisers, accelerators or retarders, air entraining, and others. Liquid chemical and mineral admixtures are generally being utilised to achieve super concrete properties. Some of these additives are driven by recent environmental concerns of the cement and concrete industry. Basically, there are new additives and admixtures on the market based on the required material properties of any construction job. Understanding of what is, and any associated effects should guide you in choosing a preferred additive. You may have to investigate deeper on the latest ones. Nano technology is already proposing novel approaches for the utilisation of new materials in modern construction. Cheers
Before 5 years I assist modern construction material course. If we use additives and admixtures as synonymous here; super pasteurizer( water reducing agent), fly ash, air entering agents are some of the modern admixtures used for concrete. In my understanding additives are used in mix for cement as raw materials
