Could you check the density of your genetically modified wood - it could be first reason, second, probably you could check your g.m wood microstructure, compare relevant microstructural features of native and g.m wood. I have tested native and g.m Mahagoni under light microscopy for one of my friends from Gana, and we found qiute big differences in density as well in microstructure...
