The current administration intends to remove clean water act protections from small waterbodies such as ephemeral and intermittent streams. We suspect that this will harm water quality, but I am also interested in what such deregulation will do to the critters growing and spawning in these smaller streams. We are filing comments on a rulemaking and need to address these issues in the next two weeks.
In my opinion I think that in relation to the fauna the groups that would be most affected would be the macro invertebrates (Insect and aquatic molluscs, shrimp), others would be the fish. The impact would be more negative in these ecosystems if there is any species of these groups that was local endemic to this region and in turn is cataloged in some category of threat by the IUCN, CITES or other Regulation of the conservation of the nature of your country.
It should also be analyzed that not only the fauna that interacts directly with these small reservoirs of water is affected, but also those that depend at some point on their life cycle.
In addition, abiotic factors, such as water level and concentration of dissolved oxygen, BOD, COD and salinity, would be affected.
The consequences of modifying these ecosystems would be many.
