Spear fishing (freediving) is considered by many to be the most selective form of fishing with the further advantages of neither bycatch nor pollution by loss of fishing gear.
In your country, how is recreational spear fishing legislated and what is your personal opinion regarding it? I am especially interested in collecting points of view from many different areas. Data on catches and CPUE's are very much welcome.
I might also add that this technique has enabled me to publish a number of papers that, without which, I do not imagine how the needed collections could have been made.
At this moment, I'm dealing with recreational spear fishing (freediving) and not professional collection either freediving or with scuba.

spear fishing is forbidden in Hungary because the law describes it as animal cruelty. In addition there is no tradition for such fishing method by us.

Spearfishing while it does not yield bycatch, but has destructive impacts on the habitats. Most of spearfishing is taking place in the shallow waters where most of the sensitive habitats, such as coral reefs and seagrasses, are abundant. Spearfishing in such habitats usually associated with severe destruction which take the habitats long time to restore. The policy makers should make area restrictions to protect sensitive habitats from this destructive fishing gears.
Dear Roland and Natheer. Many thanks for your contributions to my answer. I'll register them in a kind of overall analysis from different sites and points of view. In Hungary its understandable since there is no seashores albeit spear fishing is also practised in inland waters (namely USA). The subjective matter of cruelty is somehow interesting to discuss: while spear fishing induces a quick death - and we do not even know if fish feel pain - gill nets and hooks fill very slowly so this could be an important matter for further discussion.
