It depends upon when and for what the students are using the smartphones. if students used it in a positive way then definitely it will be a great asset.
The answer can’t be about the smartphone but about the use of the smartphone (what for ? How ? When ? Etc.)
In my classroom, I will allow students to use a dictionary on their smartphones. Furthermore, there are many e-learning tools that I use (quizzes, online votes, online mindmapping, online responsive video quizzes) that they will have to use their smartphone for. These are very motivating, and makes them really focussed. Also I have them use apps, such as the interactive sound app by Macmillan. At first they will beatbox with the sounds, after a while they discover how helpful such an app is. Hope to have helped you!
