We are attempting to find the references for HLB value of Benzalkonium chloride, also known as benzyldimethylhexadecylammonium chloride. Does anyone give me the reference? Thank you.
The literature is very poor regarding HLB values of ionic surfactants. These values could only be calculated on Davies' scale, instead of the more common Griffin's one (note that the two scales are not consistent with each other). Davies gave a value for N (nitrogen in tertiary amines), but not for quaternary ammonium ion. In addition, benzalkonium chloride contains a benzene ring, which was not considered as such by Davies (only -CH3, -CH2- and -CH=) and the commercial product is a mixture, i.e. the hydrophobic part is not a single aliphatic chain, but contains C12 to C18 components. Therefore, in my opinion, only experiments of partitioning of benzalkonium chloride between aqueous and organic phase will give you a correct answer.
