I did not find the solubility parameter itself in Barton's "Handbook of Solubility Parameters" (CRC Press 1983, 2nd printing 1985), but if you can find this book in your library, it is the best source I know how to find everything you need for calculating the HSP yourself.

Could you please help me to get the HSP for 1,5-pentanedithiol (PDT), 1,6-hexanedithiol (HDT) and 1,8-octanedithiol (ODT)? I also haven't got these valuse.

Unfortunately, google won't give additional insight in this case, I have already tried it. The Landolt-Börnstein entry is a good suggestion, which I had already previously discovered myself but had no access to. However, upon close examination, I found that the only reference stated for the Landolt-Börnstein entry quotes the original article by Arichi, which just deals with the Hildebrandt solution parameter. Do you have any additional clue that the Landolt-Börnstein will indeed contain the HSP? I would consider buying it in this case!

Finally, this leaves me with the Handbook of Solubility Parameters which has a hefty price, but I will try to get it.

I can not give you a better advice than what I gave above:

- your university will have a library where you maybe are lucky to fin the book published by Barton, it is by far the best for solubility parameters; in case your university library does not have, some other university may have, Berlin, Potsdam, Hannover (TIB), or Max-Planck-Institute for Polymer Research, Mainz

- also, your university should be able to access the article for which I gave you the link, at least via TIB Hannover you can get a hard copy.

Let me know what the result of your attempts are :-)

Ankur, also for you my advice is: try to find this Barton Handbook, it is outstanding, really, and worth the time searching for it.

I have a copy in my personal library, but I am not at home, can't access it now.

thank you very much for this suggestion, but I am looking for Poly(2-Vinylpyridine) not Poly(2-Vinylpyrrolidone). I admit these two polymers may easily be mixed up, based on the fact that both are sometimes referred to as PVP.

I decided to calculate it on my own, realizing that I had all the relevant data at hand in knowing the solvents and non solvents for P2VP. Therefore, I wrote a tiny program to look for a set of HSP which minimizes the distance to all the good solvents. My estimate for delta_d, delta_p and delta_h has a delta_total of 21.2 which is in good agreement with the reference of Arichi.

thanks for the follow up. PVP at your referenced page refers to polyvinylpyrilidone. I looked into poly(2-vinyl pyridine) P2VP which is admittedly sometimes abbreviated PVP as well. Can be confusing. I cannot comment on polyvinylpyrilidone.

Just as a follow-up, in case others find this thread and want to use it as a resource: as presented on a side-note in my publication in Polymer (see attached PDF, Table. 3), a reasonable estimate of the Hansen Solubility Parameters (HSP) can be obtained from a list of reported solvents for P2VP (the idea is to minimise the distance in Hansen space between the estimated HSP for P2VP and all its reported solvents). This results in an estimate for the P2VP HSPs of (16.3, 6.5,8.0) MPa^1/2 (rho_d,rho_p,rho_h). Since in this estimate, I have not used non-solvents data, it remains a rough estimate which assumes that the distribution of reported solvents used in the calcuation is somewhat well behaved (i.e. not clustered at one point in Hansen-space). Confidence in the estimate is however obtained by the good match of the estimated HSPs with the experimental report by Arichi et al. on the Hildebrandt Solubility Parameter. Arichi et al. find a Hildebrand Solubility Parameter of 21.3 MPa^1/2 for P2VP. When the Hildebrand Solubility Parameter is calculated from the estimated HSPs given above, it equates to 21.2 MPa^1/2 which is in good agreement.
