I have heard many reasons to do a postdoc when interested in working in the public sector including:

  • To gain reputation
  • To publish
  • To gain experience setting up lab
  • To learn a new skill
  • To learn to manage people

But many of these seem contradictory, for instance a postdoc that helps start a lab may not publish as much as a postdoc with an established lab. Also many postdoc listings here and on other sites require applicants to have expertise in the field prior to application.

With this in mind what should a PHD student be looking for as an ideal postdoc?
