From desktop computer to pervasive computing. From physical interfaces to natural interfaces. Which is the role of human beings? human-automation interaction, levels of automation, computer-human interaction. Can someone give an opinion about the future of human-computer interaction?
I think this is a very good and interesting question. My perspective is one from healthcare and we have been thinking about it is a couple of directions.
- Pervasiveness: As Lasith mentions, there will be invisible interfaces of several kinds. This will include sensors that we interactive with but that may not interact back as much (initially).
- Microinteractions: We see this now with mobile and smart watches and I think there will be some more of this.
- Data Synthesis: for lack of a better term. Ways of bubbling up meaningful information from all the data of pervasiveness and micro interactions and the relations between.
Admittedly, I have my medical / health view on when thinking about these and I hope they help with your question.

Regarding with NUI Cristina Manresa.Yee and Ann Morrison are developing a special track in NUI in the Interacción 2015 XVI International Conference on Human Computer Interaction: http://interaccin2015.upc.edu.
I have a collegue and his research is Computer Human Interaction. From the point of view ot nanoelectronics he is adding electronic xips into cells. So, where is the frontier? )Jose Antonio Plaza and a paper in the journal Nature Nanoelectronics)
I agree, NUIs seem to be a very promising approach! E.g., currently we work with cameras with depth-sensors, what allows us to implement very intuitive interfaces with a high user acceptance.
I'm sceptical whether we will have much NUIs that operate in 3D visualization spaces (instead of gestures manipulating objects in 2D space), since adding a spatial dimension does not make things easier. And although speech interfaces seem to be a very "natural" thing, I don't really believe in them.
By the way: Further on we have been implementing camera-based 3D-AR apps. But regrettably it seems, as if 3D-AR is suitable for a very limited set of real-life use-cases only...
