Data science is a hot topic accompanying big data since 2012. Data science is not a new discipline. In fact, the old name for data science prior to 2012 includes database, data management, data engineering, data systems, data technology, more general, data computing.

Database has been developing since early 1970s. Database management systems have been also developed since the similar time.

Data management becomes an important topic for information systems and technology, in particular for organisations. But it is the oldest discipline.

Data engineering is also an important discipline or streams. At least since 1960s.

Based on computing curricula (ACM, 2005) computing is a superdiscipline including computing science (e.g. computer science), computing engineering (e.g. computer engineering, software engineering), computing technology (e.g. information technology), computing systems (e.g. information systems). Therefore, data computing should consist of data science, data engineering, data technology, data management, and data systems. Therefore, data science is a part of data computing. But now data science is emerging as a new science (Chen, 2017) since big data came as a new frontier for research and development, for organizations and governments, for market and industry in 2012. It is now a mixture of data mining school, data management school, database systems school. All these have not a common foundation, in other words, what is the foundation of data science? This is still a big issue.
