While most organizations and institutes try to help researchers (guide them) directly or indirectly towards sub-specialty.
Here, I hope we could discuss all ideas towards selecting topics and specialization for both independent and institutes scientific researching.

My higher educations weren't in similar disciplines.
At first I was studying Computer Science & Management Studies, but now I have degrees in Business Information Technology, Translation Studies, International Law, and British Studies.
I somehow understand the relationship between the mentioned apparently irrelevant courses.
As a CEO of a business consulting company I am happy that I studied management, business, and law.
Regarding my postgraduate studies which is related to cultural and political studies; I am so glad that I have the background in international relations, sociolinguistics, and most importantly in discourse analysis.

I absolutely agree with your scenario, while studying the relevant subjects would be on higher productivity and helpful to support business and marketing.
What I am trying to get from this discussion is to answer some questions like :
1. Do you relay on market to start the courses required by the market?
2. Do you relay on your interesting to get you courses ??
3. What is you plan in case that your interesting area is shared between two fields for example :
Security is shared between Math and Information Theory also Communication Engineering.
So would you plan to get highlight of security topics or to go through Math and Information theory as well as Communication Engineering.

I understand your question, just has an easy answer: in my school, the specialty that the investigator chooses, is in most of the occasions is suggested by the graduate faculty, ie young graduates are not familiar with the environment their specialty because they are awash in theories.
On the other hand, you mentioned computer security and communications, these are interesting issues which I recently studied, and that is where my experience in the practice of communications technologies have their opportunity, because there are not only encryption, authentication, threats or attacks, here the physical layer becomes the dominant theme for the performance of TCP / IP
