i hope its all fine. i am doing doctoral study on urban sprawl its drivers, impacts and consequences: evidence from Karachi. can you please suggest empirical modes to check and evaluate the drivers of the urban sprawl. please note that i have results of the urban sprawl via GIS and RS methods for (1975, 1987, 1995, 2007,2015) periods. basically i am looking for conceptual framework, model and data suggestion for drivers of the urban sprawl. hope it helps.

There is no any perfect answer for this my dear. There are several studies done by the scholars and you may able find research articles.
some of the articles which I read for my BSc also have that time series small studies.

As to conceptual framework, you should try not to confuse urban sprawl with "normal" expansion of the city. Gordon and Richardson published a paper in late 1990s about the definition of urban sprawl, which can be defined at both macro level and micro level. Especially for urban sprawl at macro level, you need to define a benchmark for urban development. In many cases, a monocentric model is a good benchmark in developing countries. Urban development that is in excess when compared with a monocentric model or your benchmark model could be regarded as sprawl.
