As we see that the speed breeding is mainly based on considerable modifications in the plant growth environments to gain rapid generation advancements, does such pre-disposal of plants to changing environments have epigenetic influences over generations?
It should have a significant influence since environmental factors like modified nutrition or temperature regime are shown to induce epigenetic inheritance in plants (see Melnikova et al., 2016. Front. Plant Sci. 7: 399; Koumoto et al., 2018. Env. Exp. Bot. 155: 307-312). But in case of speed breeding this impact seems to be not studied so far.
Notably, hereditary effects of modified nutrition are not limited to epigenetic inheritance: in some cases, specific changes in DNA sequences are also induced (see Cullis and Charlton, 1981. Plant Sci. Lett. 20: 213–217; Chen et al., 2005. New Phytol. 167: 171–180).
Environmental impact on speed breeding has not yet studied but the environmental influence on plant aspect like morphological changes and nutrient changes have been studied so for.
