I have been trying to generate a 2D drawing from available STL file of a very complex geometry of a porous structure. I have tried to import STL file into Solidworks but it only gives a graphical view of the model from which generation of 2D CAD drawing is not possible. I have tried another software MeshLab but it only gave me a 2D drawing of one of the face of the modeled structure.

I think, you can try with Altair hyperworks software "HYPERMESH", where you can try to import your STL file and delete the inner volume(solids) the you get your required 2D outer surface.
A possibility is to convert the STL file to IGES. Then you have a surface model with a big number of surface elements. These surface elements can be merged and after that, the merged surface model can be converted to a solid model by use of a Fill-Function. It might be a problem, that the IGES file has some "open" surfaces, so that the merging and filling process does not work automatically. In this case, the open surface spots must be repaired by hand.

You can try converting STL file into IGES or STEP format in CREO software.

We have options like create surfaces while importing the stl file. This can help in getting surfaces. Best possible way to get good surfaces from stl will be use of software like geo magic or rhinocerose ...lot of flexibility is provided here... Hope it will help.

You can import a .STL in OpenScad and export that i.e. as a DWG file.
I know not every .STL is accepted. But maybe it works for you
A DWG file is not a Solid model, as requested by Khurram Munir.

You can convert your stl file to IGES or stp in your old software. And then you will import to solidworks.
