Could any of you tell me if V2O4 and VO2 are exactly same, or is there a structural difference?
From the chemical formula it is clear that their oxidation state is same. However, there may be subtle variation the structure or a mixed phase of some vanadium oxide.
If we start with V2O4 as a starting material, then should we get VO2 by heat treatment? Any idea on this?
V2O4 and VO2 are the same, as well as V3O6, V4O8, V5O10, etc ! Generally, the simplest formula is used, as for NaCl, but everybody knows that it is not a molecule, but a solid NanCln, where n is infinite. Probably V2O4 has been used because it is consistent with the series of other oxides V2O3 and V2O5. Therefore, V2O2 (i.e. VO) also exists, although this oxide is non-stoichiometric.

Can I get thin film of VO2 from V2O4 pallet?
Does the effect of the doping elements like W, Al etc have the same effect in V2O4 as that they produce in VO2?
Yes, you can. Following up this thread and with regards to thin films. From a V2O4 pellet / powder, through evaporation to substrate, does the deposited thin film exhibit V2O2-like phase transition properties (transition ~ 68degC) or does it require post-annealing? If the latter, why and what type of conditions are typically used? Thank you in advance for any help.
